RRI.CO.ID, Banda Aceh - Soft-shell crab (kepiting soka) aquaculture developed by coastal communities in Meuraxa Subistrict, Banda Aceh, has successfully expanded into national supply chains and major Asian export markets, including Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, and China.
Local cultivators manage the crabs through molting stages in specialized ponds, harvesting every 15 days with yields reaching up to 480 kilograms per cycle or approximately 960 kilograms per month. Shipments are routed through Medan, North Sumatra, before being exported overseas at a weekly volume of 70 to 100 kilograms, alongside distribution to domestic markets in Jakarta and major cities across Java.
With market prices holding steady at approximately IDR 200,000 per kilogram, the commodity has provided significant economic stability for coastal households in the provincial capital.
Aquaculture farmers and local administration officials emphasized that rapid cultivation cycles and structured municipal support are driving sustainable growth for coastal fisheries. Local soft-shell crab cultivator Muhammad Rafli detailed the operational scale and market reach of his family-run aquaculture business.
"We route our shipments through Medan before exporting overseas, sending around 70 to 100 kilograms weekly to Asian markets alongside domestic distribution to Jakarta and Java, once seed stock is introduced, harvest takes about 15 days, yielding up to 480 kilograms per single harvest," Rafli said in Banda Aceh on Friday, August 28, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Head of the Banda Aceh Food, Agriculture, Maritime, and Fisheries Agency (DPPKP) Iskandar affirmed the city administration's commitment to supporting local aquaculture groups.
"The administration provides continuous guidance and technical assistance through fishery extension officers to help farmers expand their businesses, to streamline grant assistance for seeds and equipment, cultivators are encouraged to submit proposal requests through registered farmer groups and legal foundations in accordance with current regulations,"Iskandar added. ***
