Minister Budi: Technology the Key to the Retail Shopping Experience

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Minister of Trade, Budi Santoso, emphasized the importance of adopting technology to enhance the consumer shopping experience at the Indonesia Retail Summit and Expo (IRSE) 2026 in Jakarta, Wednesday, August 24, 2026. This digital transformation is considered essential for the national retail industry to remain competitive amid shifting global market trends.

The retail sector serves as the frontline of the economy, connecting producers with the public. Therefore, the ability to understand consumer needs is key to ensuring business sustainability today.

“The transformation of the retail industry is becoming increasingly important in delivering a shopping experience that is consistent and relevant to consumer needs. The use of the right technology can be one way for the retail sector to accommodate changes in consumer shopping behavior while strengthening the competitiveness of the national retail industry,” Budi said.

The government continues to promote the modernization of commerce through the adoption of digital payment systems among the public. Currently, the use of QRIS payment technology has become widespread and has been adopted by the majority of MSME operators.

Chairman of the Indonesian Retailers Association (HIPPINDO), Budihardjo Iduansjah, also emphasized the importance of brick-and-mortar retailers quickly adapting to digital innovations. He stressed that the use of modern technology is essential for business owners.

“Brick-and-mortar retailers must adapt so they don’t fall behind. We hope that participation in IRSE will encourage retailers to learn how to sell, whether through malls or suppliers,” he said.

The IRSE 2026 event, held at PIK Avenue, serves as a vital platform for collaboration between the government and industry players. This annual forum is expected to strengthen sustainable national economic growth.
