RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia and Vietnam reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their comprehensive strategic partnership by deepening bilateral cooperation in various fields, including economics, investment, defense, maritime security, and the digital economy. The two countries aim to increase bilateral trade to USD 18 billion by 2028.

This commitment is outlined in a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the Indonesia-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Action Plan, which was signed by Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono and Vietnamese Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung after the 6th Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) Meeting in Jakarta on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.

"Regarding economic cooperation, we reaffirm our commitment to achieving a bilateral trade target of USD 18 billion by 2028," said Minister Sugiono in a joint press conference with Vietnamese Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung, as quoted by Antara

To meet the goal, Indonesia and Vietnam will boost trade and investment while removing trade barriers. The two governments will strengthen interactions between businesses and accelerate the implementation of various accords to generate tangible benefits for people in Indonesia and Vietnam.

The (MoU) also covers the implementation of exclusive economic zone (EEZ) agreements, the strengthening of maritime defense and security cooperation, and the prevention of cross-border crime, particularly the eradication of narcotics.

Indonesia and Vietnam agreed to expand their collaboration in agriculture, science, technology, technology development, electric vehicle supply chains, and the digital economy as they are considered sectors with significant growth potential.

Meanwhile, Vietnamese Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung said that the two countries will strengthen connectivity to bolster trade and investment cooperation. Trung expressed optimism that the USD 18 billion bilateral trade target can be achieved or surpassed ahead of schedule, given the growing trade trend between the two countries. ***
