RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s largest state-owned bank, Bank Mandiri, is extending its global digital payment footprint, enabling customers to use its QR cross-border service in China - one of the world’s largest digital payment markets.

The feature, available through the Livin’ by Mandiri app, builds on earlier rollouts in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Japan, and South Korea.

The bank's Director of Network and Retail Banking, Jan Winston Tambunan, said the move is driven by strong growth in overseas transactions this year. Cross-border QR payments surged 137 percent year-on-year, reaching IDR 154 billion (USD 9.5 million) as of March 2026.

“The significant growth reflects a shift in customer behavior toward global digital payments. Expansion into China ensures customers can transact seamlessly in one of the world’s largest digital ecosystems,” Tambunan noted in a written statement on Friday, May 1, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Through the service, users can pay at merchants displaying UnionPay or Alipay QR codes without exchanging cash or manually converting currencies. Supporting services include a multicurrency yuan (CNY) account linked to Mandiri Debit cards, allowing cash withdrawals at Visa-branded ATMs in China without conversion.

Livin’ by Mandiri continues to show strong momentum, with more than 39.1 million users and transaction value reaching IDR 1,200 trillion as of March 2026. QRIS adoption has also expanded, with 9.9 million users - up 41 percent year-on-year - and transaction value rising 76 percent to IDR 64 trillion.

Looking ahead, Bank Mandiri plans to extend its cross-border QR services to additional destinations, aligning with rising demand for seamless and integrated global payment solutions. ***
