RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Ministry of Industry has intensified efforts to improve the competitiveness and market access of small and medium industries (SMIs) through a strategic partnership with PT Rumah Mebel Nusantara, the operator of IKEA Indonesia, under the Teras Indonesia program.
Although the program has been running for less than a year, it has already attracted hundreds of SMIs that have passed a curation process and secured opportunities to market their products as tenants at several IKEA outlets across the country.
Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said the Teras Indonesia program represents a strategic partnership that delivers tangible benefits in strengthening the branding of local SMI products.
“Teras Indonesia is a strategic partnership that has drawn strong interest from many SMIs. The program’s achievements are encouraging, as the ministry remains open to various forms of collaboration to elevate local brands and enable them to enter a broader industrial market ecosystem,” Minister Agus said in his statement in Jakarta on Friday, January 30, 2026, as quoted by the ministry’s official website.
The collaboration between the ministry, through its Directorate General of Small, Medium, and Miscellaneous Industries (IKMA), and IKEA Indonesia was formalized with the signing of a memorandum of understanding on December 2, 2024.
Implementation began on March 3, 2025, when seven SMIs selected by IKMA were given the opportunity to exhibit and sell their products at IKEA stores for one month.
In addition to receiving free booth facilities in the Teras IKEA area, participating SMIs gained wider exposure as their products were displayed in a global furniture retail environment with a customer base dominated by young, trend-conscious consumers.
Throughout 2025, 118 SMIs passed the Teras IKEA curation process, with 98 of them assigned to booths at seven IKEA outlets. These included IKEA Alam Sutera, IKEA Sentul City, IKEA Taman Anggrek Mall, IKEA Jakarta Garden City, IKEA Kota Baru Parahyangan Bandung, IKEA Ciputra Surabaya in selected batches, and IKEA Bali.
IKMA Director General Reni Yanita said participants recorded encouraging sales performance. She noted that SMIs managed their own sales teams, while IKEA neither deducted revenue nor charged any fees, allowing all transaction proceeds to go directly to the businesses. Participants also received training and mentoring to enhance product appeal.
Based on transaction reports from participating SMIs, total sales in 2025 reached IDR 936.99 million (approx. USD 55,846.38), with the largest contribution coming from the Teras Indonesia program at IKEA Alam Sutera in Tangerang.
Reni confirmed that the Teras IKEA program will continue throughout 2026, with curation currently underway as part of ongoing efforts to expand market access for SMIs. Registration will open quarterly, and each exhibition batch will run for one month.
Meanwhile, Director of Chemical, Clothing, and Handicraft SMIs Budi Setiawan said many participants had experienced significant benefits, particularly in improving product presentation quality.
Beyond broader market exposure, he said, the program provided training on showroom utilization, product layout, color theme selection, packaging, and storytelling for product catalogs.
“SMIs gain new perspectives on how to combine various elements to increase brand value, making their products better prepared to move up a level and penetrate wider markets,” Budi said.
One participant, Liza Lestari of Kallama Art, which produces copper and stone accessories, said the Teras IKEA program had opened substantial opportunities to enter a broader industrial ecosystem.
“Our products are becoming better known. This motivates us to continue growing, not only in retail but also through exhibitions at hotels and other channels,” she said. ***
