RRI.CO.ID, Toboali - The Tudung Saji, a traditional woven food cover deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of Bangka Belitung, has taken center stage in South Bangka Regency as a canvas for artistic innovation and cultural preservation.
Historically serving as an essential cover during the traditional Makan Ngedang communal dining custom, the heritage craft is being elevated into a visual art medium to engage younger generations and adapt to modern artistic expressions.
To highlight the cultural and aesthetic value of the craft, the South Bangka Regency Administration hosted a Tudung Saji painting competition on Tuesday, September 29, as part of the Kemilau Pesona 2026 festival at the South Bangka Sport Center in Toboali.
"The use of the Tudung Saji as an artistic medium allows us to introduce our cultural heritage to the younger generation in a creative way, this competition demonstrates the local government's commitment to sustaining tradition amidst modernization," said Acting Head of the South Bangka Cooperatives, Small and Medium Enterprises, Industry, and Trade Agency (DKUKMINDAG), Deka Indra.
The event drew 29 participants, ranging from students to local art enthusiasts, who applied paint and color to the textured surfaces of the woven covers.
Local officials emphasized that transforming the Tudung Saji into functional art not only showcases its visual beauty, but also delivers a broader message on the importance of safeguarding ancestral items and keeping local traditions vibrant. ***
