RRI.CO.ID, Banten - Golok Ciomas is a traditional Banten blade known for its distinctive forging techniques and symbolic cultural values. Originating in Ciomas, Serang Regency, the blade is made from local Pondok Kahuru iron and carries a long blacksmithing tradition.

Golok Ciomas has been recognized as Banten Intangible Cultural Heritage through Decree No. 260/M/2017. The Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture also designated it as cultural heritage in 2020.

The blade has several distinctive characteristics that set it apart from other traditional golok in Banten. These include its materials, forging methods, blade patterns, and symbolic elements.

Its production traditionally uses Pondok Kahuru iron from the Ciomas area. Some local traditions also associate the material with meteorite elements, although this remains part of the community's traditional belief.

The forging process involves complex folding and stacking techniques with specific calculations. Traditionally, the process is conducted around Maulid Nabi or Rabiul Awal and accompanied by spiritual practices.

The blade can feature distinctive motifs, including Kembang Kacang, Mamancungan, Candung, and Salam Nunggal. Each blade has individual patterns and arrangements, making no two Golok Ciomas exactly alike.

Golok Ciomas is also associated with the history of the Banten Sultanate and the local tradition of jawara. Historically, the weapon served as a means of defense and also represented courage, honor, and social standing.

Today, its function has shifted toward cultural preservation, collections, historical displays, and academic study. The tradition continues through local blacksmith communities, government support, and efforts to pass forging skills to younger generations.

Visitors can learn more about the tradition at the Golok Ciomas Museum in Citaman, which opened in 2024. The museum displays various collections, including the massive Golok Nyai Gede, recognized by MURI as Indonesia’s largest and longest golok.
