Badik Cangkingan: The Betawi Weapon Carried for Protection

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Badik Cangkingan is a traditional Betawi weapon known for its small, curved, and portable design. The weapon was historically carried by young Betawi men for personal protection when traveling far from home.

Its name is believed to come from the Betawi word “cangking,” referring to carrying something by hand or hanging it. Because the weapon was commonly carried during journeys, it eventually became known as Badik Cangkingan.

The weapon resembles the traditional rencong from Aceh and badik from Sulawesi. Its compact shape allowed users to carry it by tucking it behind their waist, inside their trousers, or beneath a sarong.

Badik Cangkingan features a sharp metal blade connected to its handle by a silver or bronze ring. The blade was traditionally made from iron or steel, with some accounts stating that the metal came from melted railway tracks.

Its handle is made from wood or ivory and features a curved shape that follows the user's grip. The wooden sheath is decorated with distinctive Betawi carvings, adding cultural character to the traditional weapon.

In the past, Badik Cangkingan served as a means of protection for Betawi travelers. Beyond its practical function, the weapon also carried symbolic associations with courage, identity, and personal honor.

Today, Badik Cangkingan is rarely used as a personal weapon and has become part of traditional cultural attire. It is particularly used as an accessory for men's traditional wedding clothing in Betawi ceremonies.

The weapon is now more commonly kept by bridal makeup artists for traditional dress arrangements and cultural events. Its changing function reflects how traditional objects can remain relevant through cultural practices.
