RRI.CO.ID, Surakarta – Keraton Surakarta Hadiningrat is one of Central Java's most important centers of Javanese history and cultural heritage. The palace complex preserves royal traditions, historical collections, architecture, and performing arts that remain connected to Solo's cultural identity.
The palace was established by Pakubuwono II in 1744 after the royal court moved from Kartasura. The relocation followed the destruction of Keraton Kartasura during the Geger Pacinan conflict in 1743.
The palace complex covers an extensive area and contains numerous buildings, courtyards, and historical collections. Visitors can find royal artifacts, traditional weapons, statues, furniture, photographs, and other objects associated with the history of the Kasunanan Surakarta court.
One of its most recognizable structures is Menara Sanggabuwana, a tower built in 1782 during the reign of Susuhunan Pakubuwono III. Rising about 30 meters, the tower holds an important place in the palace's spiritual and historical traditions.
Local traditions associate Menara Sanggabuwana with a legendary meeting between the king and Nyi Roro Kidul, the Queen of the South Sea. Historical accounts have also linked the tower to the observation of activity around the palace during the colonial period.
Another notable structure is Songgobuwono, whose name combines the Javanese words songgo, meaning support, and buwono, meaning earth. The structure reflects the symbolic relationship between the palace, Javanese cosmology, and spiritual traditions.
The palace museum contains historical collections displayed across several rooms. Its exhibits include royal photographs, carved furniture, traditional weapons, royal carriages, and models of traditional Javanese houses.
Keraton Surakarta is not only a historical site but also a living center of Javanese culture. Traditional ceremonies, gamelan performances, dances, and other cultural activities continue to take place within the palace complex.
Its location in central Surakarta also places the palace near other historic and cultural destinations, including Pasar Klewer. Together, these sites offer visitors an opportunity to explore the history, architecture, traditions, and cultural life of Solo.
