RRI.CO.ID, Banyumas - The presence of delman, a horse-drawn carriages, at Purwokerto Square in Central Java continues to be one of the public’s choices for enjoying the city-center atmosphere. These traditional vehicles are now more widely used as a means of tourism and family recreation.
Munir, a delman driver, said passengers still come, especially at night. On a typical evening, he can take passengers on several trips, with numbers usually rising on weekends. “On Saturday nights, it can reach six to seven trips,” said Munir when met at Purwokerto Square on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.
According to him, delman riders come from various groups, ranging from families to university students. They typically ride the delman to tour and enjoy the atmosphere of Purwokerto.
“Sometimes there are students too, from Unsoed (Jenderal Soedirman University) and UMP (Muhammadiyah University Purwokerto). Besides students, teenagers also ride and tour toward Jalan Baru,” he said.
Munir explained that the role of the delman today differs from the past. Whereas delman were once widely used by the public as everyday transport to go to the market, their presence is now more oriented toward urban tourism.
He assessed that the delman still holds appeal because it is a traditional vehicle that forms part of the community’s transportation history. For that reason, Munir believes its existence must continue to be preserved.
Munir hopes the delman will continue to receive attention so it can keep operating and remain part of Purwokerto’s tourism offerings. “It is also hoped that the regent will help preserve the delman so it is not eliminated,” he said. (Annaila Azzahra-EN)
