RRI.CO.ID, Bojonegoro - The Bojonegoro Geopark Information Center (PIG) in East Java has opened its doors as a comprehensive educational hub, chronicling millions of years of natural history through ancient fossils, rock formations, and regional petroleum history.
Located in Bojonegoro Regency, the two-story facility introduces visitors to regional geology, paleontology, and industrial heritage. The first floor features basic geological educational media, including earth structures, plate tectonics, and interactive silica-sand topographies, alongside igneous and sedimentary rock specimens.
The second floor houses rare paleontological discoveries, notably the lower jaw (mandibula) of an ancient Stegodon elephant and a prehistoric whale fossil uncovered in a local riverbed in 2023, proving Bojonegoro was once submerged under a marine environment.
The exhibit also features marine fauna fossils such as crabs, lobsters, and sea urchins, alongside oil mining replicas and a 48-seat audiovisual theater screening a documentary titled Jejak Minyak, Emas Hitam di Ujung Timur Indonesia (Oil Trails, Black Gold in Indonesia's Far East). Free individual visits are available Monday through Friday from 8.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. local time, with advance online reservations required for group visits exceeding 10 people.
Geopark guides and regional educational officers emphasized that accessible public facilities ensure geological conservation and regional cultural identity remain inclusive for all community segments.
"The geopark concept is inclusive, not exclusive, we welcome everyone to visit the Bojonegoro Geopark Information Center to learn about our regional heritage," PIG Geopark Bojonegoro tour guide Teguh said in Bojonegoro Regency on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, as quoted by Infopublik.id.
He highlighted the strategic connection between Bojonegoro's prehistoric past and its current petroleum systems.
"Our second-floor exhibits connect rare paleontological finds, such as the Stegodon jaw and 2023 prehistoric whale fossil, directly to our petroleum system models, these displays demonstrate how ancient marine environments, geological evolution, and cultural sites interlock to form the unique identity of Geopark Bojonegoro," Teguh added. ***
