Efforts Underway to Rescue Sade Village’s Cultural Heritage After Fire

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Joint teams and customary elders continue to search through the ash remnants of the Sade Traditional Village fire in Central Lombok Regency, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), to salvage remaining woven textiles, keris (traditional daggers), and ancient manuscripts. This step is a top priority to rescue high-value cultural assets affected by the disaster.
The fire struck Sade Traditional Village in Rembitan Village, Pujut Subdistrict, Central Lombok Regency on 22 August 2026. The disaster caused damage to traditional houses, heritage buildings, sacred objects, and the local community’s valuable cultural heritage.
Chairperson-General of the Indonesian Tourism Scholars Association (ICPI), Azril Azhari, emphasized the importance of preserving cultural assets that reflect the identity of the traditional village in the post-fire recovery efforts for Sade. “The Ministry of Tourism needs to design a plan to restore the cultural spirit of Sade,” he said in Jakarta on Wednesday, 3 September 2026.
According to Azril, the recovery of Sade Traditional Village should not focus solely on rebuilding damaged buildings and infrastructure. He said cultural assets and heritage affected by the fire also need to be documented and supported in their restoration.
He cited manuscripts on the village’s history, as well as local knowledge and wisdom, as examples that need to be documented to ensure their preservation. Azril also stressed the need for assistance and mentoring for residents of Sade Traditional Village to continue their traditional crafts, arts, and fashion enterprises.
He said ICPI is ready to assist in the recovery efforts for Sade Traditional Village, including reviving culture-based tourism businesses in the area.
As reported by Antara, Tourism Minister, Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, has surveyed the condition of Sade Traditional Village after the fire and conveyed her ministry’s readiness to help restore the traditional village. She also highlighted the need to provide working capital assistance, weaving tools, and facilities to support economic activities for residents affected by the fire in this tourist destination.
Culture Minister, Fadli Zon, said the government’s top priority in the emergency response phase is securing and identifying the remaining cultural objects in Sade Traditional Village. This will be followed by physical and non-physical rescue efforts.
Physical rescue efforts include sifting through debris remnants to save remaining woven textiles (wastra), sacred objects such as keris and spears, and fragments of scorched ancient manuscripts. Meanwhile, non-physical rescue efforts involve documenting memories, folk tales, local history, and traditional knowledge from customary elders to preserve the collective memory of the Sade community.
The Ministry of Culture has submitted recovery recommendations and a joint action plan with the local administration and customary stakeholders to restore the condition of Sade Traditional Village.
The recovery recommendations presented cover the restoration of physical conditions, economic recovery, and the revival of cultural advancement objects in the traditional village. ***
