RRI.CO.ID, Bintan - The Wan Seri Beni Beach Festival in Sebong Pereh Village, Teluk Sebong Subdistrict, Bintan Regency, Riau Islands, has emerged as a promising new regional tourism highlight, drawing over 500 participants across the province.
The festival centered on the lomba jong, a traditional coastal Malay maritime competition featuring uncrewed miniature sailboats powered entirely by wind currents. Attracting competitors and spectators from Bintan, Tanjungpinang, Batam, and surrounding coastal islands, the event energized the local economy and boosted micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
Following the strong turnout, regional officials and village organizers announced plans to scale up the festival, with efforts underway to officially integrate the Wan Seri Beni Beach Festival into Bintan Regency's annual tourism calendar with municipal and private sector support.
Bintan Regency Secretary Ronny Kartika emphasized the broader economic and cultural impact of the traditional sailing competition. "This festival is far more than a recreational game; it is an invaluable maritime cultural heritage that must be preserved continuously, events like this deliver significant positive impacts for local community economies, MSMEs, and regional tourism promotion while reinforcing our local identity," Ronny Kartika said at Wan Seri Beni Beach on Monday, August 31, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Head of Sebong Pereh Village Bahari expressed optimism regarding the event's future development and integration into broader tourism frameworks.
"This festival serves as a vital creative and recreational space for the younger generation to connect deeply with coastal Malay heritage, with joint support from the regional administration and private stakeholders, we are confident this event can expand in scale and secure its place on Bintan's official annual tourism calendar," Bahari added. ***
