Kudus Tower Mosque Blends Hindu, Buddhist and Islamic Design

RRI.CO.ID, Kudus - Kudus Tower Mosque stands out for blending Hindu, Buddhist, and Islamic elements within one historic complex. Located in Kauman Village, Kudus District, Central Java, its distinctive design reflects cultural acculturation during Islam's development in Java.

The mosque's original name is Al-Quds Mosque, while its construction is traditionally attributed to Ja'far Shadiq, known as Sunan Kudus. Historical records cited in the source place its establishment around 956 Hijri, or 1549, although other manuscripts provide different dates.

Its architectural character reflects the way Islamic teachings developed alongside existing Hindu and Buddhist traditions in Kudus. Sunan Kudus incorporated familiar cultural elements to make the spread of Islam more accessible to local communities.

The Kudus Tower is the complex's most prominent structure, featuring architectural characteristics associated with Hindu temples. Standing 18 meters tall, the tower uses red bricks and traditional ornaments without cement-based mortar.

The tower also features a structure resembling a temple, including a traditional passage at its base. Its design has been compared with Hindu-Javanese temples and the kul-kul towers found in Bali.

The mosque complex contains the Tomb of Sunan Kudus, which attracts pilgrims from various regions and countries. Other figures buried there include military commanders and Islamic scholars from Kudus.

Another distinctive feature is the ancient ablution area, which has eight water spouts associated with Buddhist philosophy. The design reflects Asta Sanghika Marga, or the Eightfold Path, through its eight-spout arrangement.

The complex also includes the Kembar Gate (Lawang Kembar), featuring Hindu-influenced architectural forms resembling traditional gates. The mosque remains connected with local traditions through Dhandhangan and Buka Luwur, which are held annually.
