Yogyakarta a Special Region of Indonesia, Do you Know Why?

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Every August 31 marks the anniversary of the enactment of Law No. 13 of 2012 on the Special Region of Yogyakarta. But what makes Yogyakarta different from other provinces in Indonesia?

Yogyakarta’s special status is closely linked to the long history of the Yogyakarta Sultanate and the Pakualaman Duchy. Both institutions have played important roles in the political, social, and cultural life of Yogyakarta for centuries.

Following Indonesia’s proclamation of independence on August 17, 1945, Sultan Hamengku Buwono IX and Paku Alam VIII declared their support for the newly established Republic of Indonesia. Their decision became an important part of Yogyakarta’s history and its relationship with the Indonesian state.

Yogyakarta also played a significant role in maintaining the Indonesian government during the early years of independence. The city served as the temporary capital of the Republic of Indonesia from 1946 to 1949, when Jakarta was under Dutch military occupation.

Yogyakarta’s special status was later given a specific legal foundation through Law No. 13 of 2012. The law recognizes five areas of special authority: the appointment of the governor and deputy governor, institutional arrangements, culture, land affairs, and spatial planning.

One of the features that distinguishes Yogyakarta is its system for filling the positions of governor and deputy governor, which is closely connected to the Sultan of Yogyakarta and the Duke of Pakualaman. Beyond government, the region’s traditional values, cultural practices, and historical heritage remain an important part of everyday life in Yogyakarta.

Yogyakarta’s special status is therefore not simply an administrative distinction, but also a reflection of Indonesia’s history. Through the combination of traditional institutions, modern governance, and cultural heritage, Yogyakarta represents how historical traditions can continue to exist within the framework of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia.
