BRIN-UIN Ar-Raniry Develop Portable Model to Preserve Flood-Damaged Manuscripts

RRI.CO.ID, Banda Aceh - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) in collaboration with Islamic State University (UIN) Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh has developed a low-cost, portable manuscript conservation model to rescue historical documents damaged by severe flash floods and landslides that struck nine regencies and cities across Aceh in late 2025.
At least 520 historical manuscripts were identified as flood-damaged during field assessments. Developed alongside the Nusantara Manuscript Society (Manassa) and the National Library of Indonesia (Perpusnas), the conservation system utilizes a manual knock-down portable drying chamber. Unlike traditional heavy freeze-drying machinery, this modular chamber allows for immediate in situ stabilization and drying at disaster sites, preventing further decay of fragile historical texts.
UIN Ar-Raniry’s Faculty of Adab and Humanities is set to serve as a specialized ancient manuscript laboratory, while BRIN's Development Policy Deputyship prepares policy recommendation documents to institutionalize these hydrological disaster risk management protocols nationwide.
Research leaders and academic conservationists emphasized that establishing rapid-response, field-deployable drying protocols is vital for safeguarding Indonesia's documentary heritage against recurring climate hazards.
Research Team Leader at BRIN's Research Center for Manuscripts, Literature, and Oral Traditions Husnul Fahimah Ilyas detailed the operational design of the conservation framework.
"The model is designed to be portable, modular, low-cost, and directly applicable in situ across regions vulnerable to hydrological disasters, beyond immediate physical preservation, our collaborative research aims to establish comprehensive disaster risk management protocols to protect irreplaceable documentary heritage," Husnul said in Banda Aceh on Sunday, August 30, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Chairman of Manassa Aceh and Deputy Dean at UIN Ar-Raniry Hermansyah highlighted the regional impact and future academic application of the project.
"Field surveys confirmed that at least 520 manuscripts across nine regencies and cities in Aceh suffered damage from the floods, developing this local conservation capability enables UIN Ar-Raniry to function as an ancient manuscript laboratory, ensuring these recovery methods can be replicated to save historical texts in future disaster scenarios," Hermansyah noted. ***
