RRI.CO.ID, Banda Aceh - A handwritten Quranic manuscript estimated to be 180 years old, penned by prominent Acehnese Islamic scholar Syekh Abdurrahman Lampaloh (Teungku Chik Lampaloh), is currently undergoing a comprehensive digitalization process in Banda Aceh to safeguard its contents from physical decay.
The preservation project was highlighted by doctoral candidate Nurrahmi from Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh during the 10th International Library and Information Science Society Conference (I-LISS) 2026 at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in Shah Alam, Malaysia.
Due to aging paper, fragile pages, and fading ink, researchers initiated a three-stage digital archiving framework, predigitalisation, digitalization, and post-digitalization, to capture both the Quranic text and extensive marginal annotations (paratexts) detailing historical Islamic scholarship.
Conducted alongside senior academics from UIN Ar-Raniry and Al-Azhar University, the initiative aims to provide remote access for global researchers while eliminating the need to handle the delicate physical masterpiece directly.
UIN Ar-Raniry Islamic Studies Doctoral Researcher Nurrahmi outlined the core objectives of the manuscript preservation project. "Digitalization goes far beyond merely converting a physical manuscript into a digital format; it serves as a critical effort to protect the Islamic knowledge embedded within it so it can continue to be studied and passed down," Nurrahmi said during her presentation at UiTM Shah Alam on Thursday, August 27, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
"Physical degradation and fragile pages threatened the readability of Teungku Chik Lampaloh's work. Digitizing these pages ensures that future generations and scholars can access and study these ancestral treasures without repeatedly handling or further deteriorating the original document," Nurrahmi added. ***
