RRI.CO.ID, Lubuk Basung - Nagari Tabek Panjang in Baso Subdistrict, Agam Regency, West Sumatra, took center stage on Thursday, August 27, 2026, as its fifth annual art show showcased the depth of traditional Minangkabau heritage and established the village as a growing destination for international cultural tourism.
The event featured a grand parade of roughly 2,000 participants from the village's three sub-villages (jorong), highlighting unique adat salingka (local customary traditions), ancestral rituals, and historical artifacts. Attracting a delegation of 40 foreign tourists from Malaysia, the festival provided a blueprint for community-led tourism packages designed to spur local economic growth while upholding Agam Regency's core philosophy of adat basandi syara', syara' basandi kitabullah (custom based on Islamic law, Islamic law based on the Quran).
Local administration officials, village leaders, and foreign visitors highlighted that cultural preservation serves as both an educational foundation for younger generations and a catalyst for international tourism. Head of the Agam Regency Education Agency Andri expressed strong support for the village's commitment to cultural transmission.
"In line with Agam Regency's vision of upholding adat basandi syara', syara' basandi kitabullah, we hope these traditional rituals and arts will continue to be passed down to our younger generations, this festival successfully showcases how local tradition can strengthen community cohesion while enhancing regional tourism," Andri said in Baso on Thursday, August 27, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Wali Nagari (Village Head) of Tabek Panjang Doni Suhendri detailed the inclusive community approach and future tourism plans.
"We brought in around 40 international tourists from Malaysia, and moving forward, the nagari plans to build tourism packages that introduce local culture while creating business opportunities for residents, our focus remains on preserving local customs while accommodating our diverse community, fully supported by our customary leaders (ninik mamak) and diaspora network," Doni Suhendri added.
Malaysian tourist Encik Syukur shared his impression of the cultural displays showcased during the event. "There is an incredible richness of culture and tradition here in Minangkabau that we are witnessing firsthand for the very first time, I plan to bring a larger group next year and hope this festival becomes officially integrated into international tour itineraries in Indonesia," Encik Syukur noted during his visit. ***
