RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – August 27 marks World Rock Paper Scissors Day, celebrating a simple game known across generations and in many parts of the world. Beyond being a children’s pastime, the game is often used as a quick and playful way to settle choices or make simple decisions.

Rock Paper Scissors is played with three basic gestures: rock, paper, and scissors. Rock beats scissors, scissors beat paper, while paper beats rock.

Although the rules are simple, the game involves a combination of strategy, anticipation, and luck. Players must choose their gesture while trying to predict what their opponent might play.

In Indonesia, a similar game is commonly known as “suit.” Besides the familiar rock, paper, and scissors version, Indonesians also have a traditional variation using the thumb, index finger, and little finger.

Suit has become a familiar part of everyday social interactions in Indonesia, particularly when people need a simple way to decide who goes first. It can happen spontaneously among friends, family members, or children during games and other activities.

The popularity of suit illustrates how a simple game can become part of a community’s everyday habits. Despite the rise of digital entertainment and modern games, Rock Paper Scissors and its local variations remain easy to play because they require no equipment and can be understood almost anywhere.

World Rock Paper Scissors Day offers an opportunity to look back at a seemingly simple game that has crossed generations and cultures. In Indonesia, it also highlights the familiar tradition of suit, showing how a playful activity can become part of everyday life.
