NTB Museum Salvages Historic Artifacts After Sade Village Fire

RRI.CO.ID, Mataram - The West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Museum has initiated emergency salvage and inventory operations to protect remaining historical artifacts following the devastating fire that swept through the 16th-century Sade Traditional Village in Central Lombok on Saturday, August 22, 2026.
Following two field inspections conducted with approval from local village heads and tourism awareness groups (Pokdarwis), museum staff recovered century-old weaving equipment, traditional household utensils, grain samples (gabah), and damaged handwoven textiles (kain tenun). The fire, which broke out at approximately 10.00 p.m. local time and spread rapidly across wood, bamboo, and thatched roofs, destroyed centuries of living heritage, including rare manuscripts and historic looms.
Among the salvaged textiles are four damaged fabrics bearing signature Sasak patterns, subahnale, pucuk rebung, geometric, and cerbon sasak, the latter representing the traditional Sasak values of mutual assistance (gotong royong) and communal harmony.
Museum authorities and cultural conservationists emphasized that safeguarding physical remnants is essential for historic documentation and guiding future authentic restoration. Head of the NTB Museum Ahmad Nuralam detailed the ongoing artifact collection efforts at the site.
"We requested permission from the village head and local Pokdarwis to collect artifacts related to the fire before debris cleanup began, we gathered various burned weaving tools, household equipment, preserved grains, winnowing baskets, and even a melted kettle spout. The fire caused significant losses, including century-old weaving apparatus and ancient manuscripts," Nuralam said in Mataram on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
NTB Museum Cultural Conservator Gusti Ayu Sri Astiti highlighted the cultural significance of the recovered handwoven fabrics.
"During our inventory two days ago, we secured four damaged woven fabrics featuring traditional patterns, notably, the cerbon sasak motif is unique to Sade Village, symbolizing the core spirit of gotong royong, togetherness, and harmony within the community," Sri Astiti added. ***
