RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The annual Kampung Tugu Festival took center stage in Koja, North Jakarta, on Sunday, August 23, 2026, showcasing the neighborhood's unique Creole-Portuguese cultural heritage as a vibrant symbol of diversity and social harmony.
Organized by the Tugu Family Association together with the GPIB Tugu Church congregation, the festival brought together local residents, visitors, and researchers to celebrate the area's rich historical legacy. Timed to coincide with the 279th anniversary of the landmark Tugu Church (Gereja Tugu), the event featured cultural performances, community gatherings, and historical showcases.
Municipal leaders praised the festival for demonstrating how historical preservation and multicultural traditions can serve as a foundation for unity and social cohesion in North Jakarta.
North Jakarta Mayor Hendra Hidayat expressed his appreciation for the community’s dedication to heritage conservation. He emphasized that preserving Kampung Tugu’s historical landmarks reinforces Jakarta’s multicultural identity and community solidarity.
"Kampung Tugu serves as a concrete example of how diverse backgrounds can become a social asset in building a harmonious and secure North Jakarta, let us continue to maintain harmony and position Kampung Tugu as a model hamlet that seamlessly integrates history, culture, and social life," Hendra said in Jakarta on Monday, August 24, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Chairperson of the GPIB Tugu Church Congregational Council Pastor Josef Bates underscored the historic church's enduring legacy. "The Tugu Church building stands as a living witness to human history across generations, we must collaborate to support and preserve this 279-year-old structure, " he noted.
Chairperson of the Tugu Family Association Rensy Poluam Mihils affirmed the local residents' commitment to safeguarding their ancestral home. This festival is an expression of love from Tugu residents for our neighborhood as we celebrate the church's 279th anniversary.
