Topeng Malangan and the Continuity of Cultural Heritage

RRI.CO.ID, Surabaya - Generational renewal is essential for preserving East Java’s traditional arts. One example is Topeng Malangan, a Malang-style mask dance that is growing as studios and artists create opportunities to pass it on to younger generations.

Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa emphasized that passing cultural knowledge to younger generations is crucial to safeguarding traditional heritage.

Khofifah said that the more young people understand the values, philosophy, and skills behind traditional arts, the stronger cultural regeneration becomes. “The success of cultural preservation is the birth of a new generation capable of continuing it. The key lies in regeneration,” she said in an official statement received in Malang, East Java, on Sunday, August 23, 2026, as reported by Antara.

Head of the East Java Culture and Tourism Agency, Evy Afianasari, said the provincial administration is encouraging the preservation of Topeng Malangan by involving artists and studios as key contributors in sustaining the traditional art form.

According to the agency, the number of Topeng Malangan dance studios increased from 11 in 2025 to 15 in 2026. The number of active artists also grew from 369 in 2025 to 589 by August 2026.

Evy said the increase shows that generational renewal is strengthening the art. More studios mean more opportunities for people, especially young learners, to study and develop Topeng Malangan.

“The growth in the number of studios and active artists shows that the Topeng Malangan ecosystem is expanding. This is crucial for strengthening generational renewal and ensuring the art form remains relevant to the younger generation,” Evy said during the Appreciation for Preservers of East Java’s Indigenous Arts event at Taman Krida Budaya, Malang City, on Thursday, August 20, 2026.

She noted that studios and active artists are essential for sustaining and transmitting the cultural values embodied in Topeng Malangan. With more practitioners, the art form can evolve in step with the times without losing its cultural identity.

Local administration authorities, together with artists and studio managers, are promoting opportunities to perform and study Topeng Malangan. These efforts aim to ensure generational continuity so the traditional art form can endure as a cultural legacy and flourish as a living art within the community. ***
