  • Temanggung has submitted the Sadranan Kupat Sewu tradition for national Intangible Cultural Heritage (WBTB) registration after being preserved for more than 50 years.
  • The tradition features communal prayers, ancestral remembrance, and the sharing of thousands of ketupat, reflecting local cultural identity and community solidarity.

RRI.CO.ID, Temanggung - The Temanggung Regency Administration in Central Java has officially submitted the annual Sadranan Kupat Sewu (One Thousand Rice Cake Wrapped in Woven Coconut Leaves during Sadranan Season) ritual for national registration as Intangible Cultural Heritage (WBTB) under the Ministry of Culture, local tourism authorities confirmed on Saturday, August 22, 2026.

Preserved for over 50 years by the agricultural community of Gedongan Hamlet in Ngemplak Village, Kandangan Subdistrict, the communal ritual combines communal prayer, ancestral veneration, and the sharing of thousands of ketupat (woven rice cakes). Head of the Temanggung Culture and Tourism Agency Supriyanto confirmed that the submission aims to formalize state documentation and safeguard regional folk traditions.

If approved, Sadranan Kupat Sewu will join previous Temanggung cultural entries that successfully secured national WBTB status, including the Wayang Kedu puppet tradition and the Bangilun folk dance from Kledung Subdistrict.

Local culture and tourism officials stressed that obtaining official heritage status serves as a baseline for active preservation, requiring sustained community participation rather than symbolic recognition. Head of the Temanggung Culture and Tourism Agency Supriyanto detailed the preservation goals behind the state filing.

"This initiative reflects our commitment to preserving local culture, we have officially registered the Sadranan Kupat Sewu tradition, and we hope it will be formally recognized as part of Temanggung’s Intangible Cultural Heritage," Supriyanto said in Temanggung on Saturday, August 22, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

He emphasized that cultural archiving must remain an ongoing responsibility for both local administration and rural communities. "Being registered does not mean our work is finished, because these recognized traditions have survived for more than 50 years, the responsibility falls on all of us to ensure they remain preserved and continue to foster social togetherness," Supriyanto added. ***
