  • Candi Klodangan in Berbah, Sleman, is an archaeological site linked to the Ancient Mataram civilization, dating to around the 9th or 10th century.
  • Excavations uncovered the temple’s white-stone foundation and a Ganesha statue, suggesting a connection to the Shiva Hindu tradition.

RRI.CO.ID, Sleman - Tucked away amid local rice fields in Padukuhan Klodangan, Sendangtirto Village, Berbah Subistrict, Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta, Klodangan temple stands as a significant historical footprint of the Ancient Mataram civilization dating back to the 9th or 10th century.

First discovered by local brickmakers on June 3, 1998, the archaeological site underwent two stages of excavation by the Yogyakarta Province Historical and Antiquities Preservation Agency (SPSP) in 1998 and 2000. The temple's foundation layout measures approximately 7.5 by 7.5 meters at a depth of 1.2 meters.

A maintenance officer at Candi Klodangan, Agus, explained that the temple structure is built from white stone (tuff). During the excavation process, officers also discovered a Ganesha statue made of andesite stone, which has since been secured in an archaeological museum.

“The temple structure was found incomplete without walls and a roof, so it is possible this building was abandoned before it was finished. The presence of the Ganesha statue gives an indication of a connection to the Shiva Hindu tradition,” Agus said, as quoted by Infopublik.id.

Although the access path to the site still winds across rice field embankments, the existence of Candi Klodangan remains an integral part of enriching the historical, cultural, and archaeological heritage within Sleman Regency. ***
