Golo Koe Festival 2026 Showcases Labuan Bajo’s Cultural Heritage

RRI.CO.ID, Labuan Bajo - Thousands of visitors, local residents, and international travelers gathered along the shores of West Manggarai as the Golo Koe Festival 2026 officially opened in Labuan Bajo, establishing itself as the centerpiece of East Nusa Tenggara’s cultural and religious tourism calendar.

Selected for the second consecutive year as a Top 10 Karisma Event Nusantara (KEN) highlight by the Ministry of Tourism, the six-day festival, running from August 10 to 15, 2026, brings together spiritual devotion, indigenous Manggarai traditions, and community-led commerce across Waterfront City Marina and Golo Koe Hill.

The festival's marquee event, the Grand Procession of Maria Assumpta Nusantara (Prosesi Akbar Maria Assumpta Nusantara), sees a statue of the Virgin Mary paraded aboard a traditional phinisi vessel across Labuan Bajo waters before leading a grand pilgrimage to the Golo Koe Marian Shrine. Devotees and cultural performers wearing traditional songke woven attire, white garments, and accessories line the parade route, accompanied by traditional Caci dance showcases, tree-planting ecological drives, and local culinary expos.

Following a highly successful 2025 iteration that generated IDR 2.82 billion (USD 159,000) in direct economic turnover across 173 small businesses and 883 local artists, the 2026 festival is projected to draw over 50,000 attendees. The surge in cultural travelers has already driven up occupancy rates across hotels, homestays, and maritime charter fleets in Labuan Bajo, solidifying the festival's role in distributing tourism revenue directly into the local economy.

Administration officials and church leaders emphasized that community ownership remains the driving force behind the event's national recognition and economic success. Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana praised local residents for anchoring Labuan Bajo’s global appeal in authentic cultural heritage.

"Tourists arrive to experience Labuan Bajo more completely, while the local community remains the primary actors determining how their identity is introduced to the world, this is quality tourism, where visitor experiences grow alongside direct economic benefits and local sustainability," she said at Waterfront City in Labuan Bajo on Monday, August 10, 2026, as quoted on the ministry's official website.

She added that grassroots cultural celebrations remain vital to achieving national tourism milestones. Bishop of Labuan Bajo Maksimus Regus noted that the festival serves as an inclusive bridge connecting rapid destination development with community welfare.
