RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian government is accelerating the repatriation of cultural artifacts illegally taken out of the country through colonial plundering and illicit trafficking, strengthening national cultural sovereignty.
Indonesia has deepened bilateral cooperation with international partners, including the Netherlands and the United States, to recover and protect cultural heritage objects. Through joint security initiatives, US agencies, including the District Attorney of New York, Homeland Security, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), have assisted in retrieving smuggled Indonesian antiquities.
In a recent handover, the Director of the FBI presented five historical Papuan artifacts, originating from the Dani, Asmat, and Lake Sentani communities, directly to President Prabowo Subianto. All returned artifacts will join the state collection and go on display at the National Museum of Indonesia in Jakarta, ensuring public and educational access to ancestral history.
The Ministry of Culture emphasized that reclaiming looted historical objects is vital for safeguarding national identity and preserving heritage for future generations. Minister of Culture Fadli Zon highlighted the strategic significance of international partnerships in combating cultural property trafficking.
"This process underscores the cultural sovereignty that Indonesia is actively building, because a great nation will not allow its rightful heritage to disappear without trace," Minister of Culture Fadli Zon stated in a press release on Monday, August 10, 2026.
He affirmed the state's commitment to preserving repatriated treasures for public education. "Every returned item represents heritage protected by the state for the benefit of future generations," Minister Fadli Zon added. (Naura Sofia-EN)
