Archipelago Carnival Enlivens Baliem Valley Cultural Festival

RRI.CO.ID, Wamena - A vibrant procession of traditional attire, indigenous music, and regional dances swept through the streets of Wamena as the Jayawijaya Regency administration hosted the Archipelago Cultural Carnival on Monday, August 10, 2026.

Serving as the central highlight of the 34th Baliem Valley Cultural Festival (FBLB) 2026, the carnival drew thousands of participants and spectators, turning the high-altitude valley into a showcase of Indonesia’s diverse cultural tapestry.

The parade, organized by the Jayawijaya Culture and Tourism Agency, featured delegations spanning all education levels, from early childhood centers and schools to university groups, alongside regional socio-cultural associations and local administration agencies (OPD).

Beyond celebrating ancestral heritage and instilling civic pride among the youth, the street parade delivered an immediate economic boost to the region, providing local micro-enterprises and food vendors a high-traffic platform to sell regional goods to visitors and festival-goers.

Regional executive officials emphasized that active community participation in public cultural events reinforces local identity and fosters peaceful social unity across Highland Papua Province.

Jayawijaya Regent Atenius Murib highlighted the cultural and educational importance of the parade during his opening address.

“The carnival is held to preserve cultural heritage by showcasing traditional attire, dances, and regional arts--nurturing love for the homeland and pride in the nation’s cultural diversity,” Atenius said in Wamena on Monday, August 10, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

He emphasized that preserving cultural roots is essential in the face of rapid contemporary shifts.

“Amid the rapid currents of modernization and globalization, our culture must retain its identity as a cultured nation. The cultural carnival serves as a vessel to unite diverse community groups in a harmonious space, while also supporting small businesses and promoting local products,” he added.

The regent concluded by expressing gratitude to the participants and calling on the public to maintain civic harmony throughout the festival.

"We extend our gratitude to all parties and participants who poured their creativity, energy, and spirit into making this a success. You are all great cultural ambassadors," he said.

"Let us enjoy these performances orderly, maintain environmental cleanliness, and demonstrate that the people of Jayawijaya Regency are friendly and peace-loving, showing our shared commitment to preserve and pass down our ancestral cultural wealth to the next generation," he added. ***
