RRI.CO.ID, Bantul - Amid rapid modernization, traditional agrarian customs continue to thrive in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, as demonstrated by the preservation of the wiwitan harvest ritual in Bangunjiwo Village, Kasihan Subdistrict, Bantul Regency.
The ancestral harvest ceremony took place in Bangunjiwo on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, serving both as a spiritual expression of gratitude for an abundant agricultural yield and a structured cultural tourism package. Village officials highlighted that integrating traditional rituals into regional tourism offerings boosts local Micro, Small, and Medium Enteprises (MSMEs) and drives family income across the surrounding communities.
Bantul Regency leaders commended the local population for sustaining ancestral heritage, noting that community-led cultural events reinforce social harmony while enriching Yogyakarta's broader cultural appeal.
Local village leaders and regency executives affirmed that maintaining traditional agricultural rituals fosters community unity while serving as an effective economic catalyst through cultural tourism. Head of Bangunjiwo Village, Parja, emphasized the spiritual and economic significance of preserving the ancestral ritual.
"This is a form of gratitude to God for the bountiful harvest provided, and it has existed since ancient times, this event also serves as a media for tourism promotion because it is actually structured as a tourism package. The expectation is that it will impact family income growth, particularly for MSMEs in Bangunjiwo Village and its surrounding areas," Parja said on Wednesday, August 5, 2026.
Deputy Regent of Bantul, Aris Suharyanta, expressed appreciation on behalf of the regency administration for the community's dedication to preserving cultural harmony. "On behalf of the Bantul Regency Administration, I express my gratitude to all officials and residents of Bangunjiwo Village who executed this wonderful wiwitan tradition, wiwitan serves as an expression of gratitude to God for providing sustenance, and this tradition reflects a harmonious and united community," he noted.
