RRI.CO.ID, Medan - North Sumatra’s ulos, traditional woven fabric, is increasingly moving up the fashion ladder through modern design touches that give the traditional fabric a fresher look and make it more relevant to today’s market. Through the momentum of Indonesia Fashion Week (IFW) 2026, collaboration between traditional textiles and fashion designers could open major opportunities for the regional fashion industry, including on the international stage.
As reported by Antara, Governor of North Sumatra Bobby Nasution said North Sumatra’s cultural richness is a major asset for driving the regional economy while also strengthening the national fashion industry, up to the international level.
“We are ready to make North Sumatra an Indonesian fashion region. We believe this cultural heritage can lift the local economy and at the same time drive the national fashion industry,” Bobby said after attending the closing of Indonesia Fashion Week (IFW) 2026 themed Ulos Simetria, in a written statement in Medan on Monday, August 4, 2026.
He believes that combining traditional ulos patterns with the touch of modern fashion designers will become a strong attraction on the global fashion stage. According to him, IFW 2026 marks an important starting point for expanding collaboration between North Sumatra and the international fashion industry.
He also expressed appreciation to Indonesia Fashion Week and all parties involved in promoting and introducing Indonesian crafts and traditional textiles, especially those from North Sumatra. The governor said that the North Sumatra Provincial Administration remains committed to supporting cultural promotion through the traditional textile sector.
“Hopefully, this will be an opening for us from North Sumatra to collaborate further with a wider world, with the international community,” he said. ***
