RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia and Tunisia are strengthening cultural diplomacy through a new film collaboration aimed at highlighting the two countries' shared historical connections and cultural heritage. Indonesia's Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, discussed the initiative with Tunisian Ambassador to Indonesia, Mohamed Trabelsi and a Tunisian film delegation during a meeting in Jakarta, Wednesday, 29 July 2026.

A key topic of the discussion was the joint production of a documentary telling the story of a Tunisian painter with historical ties to Indonesia. The project, developed by the Embassy of Tunisia in Indonesia in collaboration with the State Film Production Company (PFN) and Indonesia's public broadcaster TVRI, will also explore the historical relationship between the two nations and the legacy of the Bandung Spirit.

He welcomed the initiative, describing film as a powerful instrument for cultural diplomacy and international understanding. "Culture is a bridge for diplomacy and an important element of soft power. Through cultural exchanges, conferences, and international collaborations, we hope to further strengthen people-to-people relations between Indonesia and Tunisia," he said.

The minister said the partnership should extend beyond a single documentary and evolve into broader cooperation in film production and the creative industries. He noted that the Ministry of Culture offers several support mechanisms, including endowment and matching funds, to encourage international creative partnerships.

The proposed collaboration also includes opportunities for Indonesian and Tunisian musicians to contribute to film soundtracks, exchanges between filmmakers, and participation in international film festivals. Indonesia is also opening its film platforms, including the Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival (JAFF), to Tunisian filmmakers as part of efforts to encourage artistic exchange and knowledge sharing.

Tunisian Ambassador Mohamed Trabelsi welcomed the ministry's support and described the documentary as an important milestone in bilateral cultural cooperation. "This is the first historical co-production between Indonesia and Tunisia, and it is highly significant for us. We hope the documentary will deepen understanding of both countries while strengthening the relationship between our peoples," he said.

Beyond documenting the life of its central figure, the film will explore the broader historical and cultural connections that have linked Indonesia and Tunisia over the years. The project is expected to introduce audiences in both countries to their shared history while fostering greater appreciation of each nation's cultural identity.

The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to expanding cultural diplomacy through film, music, and artistic collaboration. Indonesian officials hope the partnership will lay the foundation for long-term creative cooperation while strengthening bilateral relations through sustained people-to-people exchanges.
