RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Selected among the Ministry of Tourism’s 125 flagship Karisma Event Nusantara (KEN), the 2026 Cisadane Festival in Tangerang, Banten returns with grand celebrations. Headlined by the legendary dragon boat races, the cultural event aims to draw over 70,000 visitors and serve as a catalyst for the local economy and tourism.
Dragon Boat Racing is a traditional team-based water sport that combines physical strength, synchronization, and rhythm. The sport utilizes long boats featuring a carved dragon head at the front (bow) and a dragon tail at the back (stern).
Haris, an 8-year-old elementary school student, said he has trained in dragon boat paddling for the past year alongside several peers who live in Gerendeng, a Tangerang neighborhood on the banks of the Cisadane River. During that time, he has competed in several races, including events outside the city.
“My father told me to join at first, but over time paddling became a lot of fun. I want to be a professional rower when I grow up,” he said after competing with his teammates at the Cisadane Festival in Tangerang on Sunday, July 25, 2026.
Besides Haris and his teammates, 11 other student-category teams participated in this year’s Cisadane Festival dragon boat races. The men’s and women’s open categories were each contested by 12 teams.
The dragon boat competitions ran from July 24 to 26, 2026, with course lengths of 200 meters for the student category and 500 meters for the open category.
Intan, a housewife who lives near the race site, said she watches the Cisadane dragon boat races every year. This year she arrived in the morning with her children and nephew to support the hometown team.
As reported by Antara, dozens of participants competed, coming not only from across Banten Province but also from other provinces such as West Java and Papua.
“For local residents, including my family, dragon boats hold a special place in our memories, and we regularly come here in June or July each year to watch the Cisadane Festival,” she said, adding that several family members also compete as dragon boat athletes.
Another spectator, Luvie, who visited Tangerang during a university break, said this was her first time watching dragon boat racing. The festival gave her a chance to get to know the city’s cultural diversity more closely.
In addition to dragon boat races as the main attraction, the festival also promotes other local cultures, from traditional games to distinctive culinary offerings. The Tangerang City Administration is targeting more than 70,000 visitors for this year’s festival. ***
