Indonesian Student Calligraphy Displayed at International Festival

RRI.CO.ID, Banyumas - Students from State Islamic University Prof. K.H. Saifuddin Zuhri (UIN Saizu) Purwokerto in Central Java once again brought their artwork to the international stage at the SeIBa International Festival (SIF) IV at UIN Imam Bonjol Padang, West Sumatra on 7–11 July 2026.
A calligraphy piece titled Harmony of Divine Revelation and Indonesian Cultural Heritage by Lisna Nur’Aini, a student in the Islamic Religious Education program, was exhibited in the festival’s calligraphy category.
The exhibition served as an appreciation space for Islamic art from participating universities. All exhibited works, including Lisna’s, became part of the event organizers’ collection after the festival as documentation of the program.
Lisna said her work draws on Surah Ar-Rum verses 58–60, which speak of the truth of God’s revelation, steadfastness of faith, and the call to patience in facing life’s challenges. “Through calligraphy, I aim to show that the values of the Qur’an remain relevant in confronting modern life’s challenges,” she said on Saturday, 11 July 2026.
She added that the verse’s message of patience is paired with Indonesian cultural symbols to present a form of dakwah (Islamic Outreach) that harmonizes with local tradition.
“The fusion of calligraphic elements and Nusantara ornaments conveys that local cultural identity does not hinder the spread of Islam. Rather, it can enrich Islamic artistic expression,” said Lisna.
Visually, the workplaces white Arabic calligraphy at the center in the shape of a mihrab (semicircular prayer niche in the wall of a mosque that indicates the direction of Kaaba), symbolizing the Qur’an as a source of life guidance and the direction of humans toward Allah The Almighty. A red-to-black color gradient represents the human journey through life’s trials, illuminated only by the light of revelation.
The piece also incorporates a peacock illustration symbolizing nobility, wisdom, and the dissemination of the Qur’anic light, alongside floral ornaments and batik motifs from various Indonesian regions. The use of blue, green, and purple completes the philosophical palette, conveying calm, hope, blessing, and spiritual dignity.
Lisna’s participation in the calligraphy category was part of UIN Saizu Purwokerto’s contribution to presenting Islamic visual arts intertwined with Indonesia’s cultural richness on an international platform.
Through works like this, UIN Saizu reaffirms its commitment to fostering students who produce art with spiritual, cultural, and humanitarian value while strengthening Indonesia’s image in international forums. (Annaila Azzahra-EN)
