Hundreds of Gumingsir Residents Hold Grebeg Sura and Harvest Parade

RRI.CO.ID, Banjarnegara - Hundreds of residents of Gumingsir Village, Pagentan Subdistrict, Banjarnegara Regency, Central Java, once again held the annual Grebeg Sura tradition as an effort to preserve their ancestral cultural heritage.
Held every month of Sura, the tradition reflects the community’s gratitude for agricultural harvests while also safeguarding long-held local wisdom passed down through generations. The Sura month refers to the Islamic month of Muharram, which is the first month in the Hijri calendar. In Javanese tradition, Sura is considered sacred, marked by spiritual reflection, rituals, and cultural ceremonies.
The series of events began with a kirab gunungan, or a parade of harvested produce, which was carried around the village over a distance of about three kilometers. After the parade, residents took part in a collective pilgrimage to the graves of the village’s ancestors as a form of respect and prayer.
The atmosphere grew livelier when the event continued with a communal meal and the tradition of scrambling for the gunungan. Residents believe the blessed agricultural produce will bring prosperity, well-being, and abundant fortune to whoever receives it.
In addition to the traditional procession, Grebeg Sura was also enlivened by various traditional art performances that entertained the community. The tradition serves not only as a moment of togetherness, but also as a means of preserving customs amid changing times and the influence of modern culture.
Gumingsir Village Head, Bejo Suroso, said the entire series of activities was an expression of gratitude for abundant harvests, as well as a commitment to preserving ancestral traditions.
“In this Grebeg Sura celebration, we held a procession of agricultural produce, visited the ancestors’ graves, shared a communal meal, and took part in the gunungan scramble. All of these activities are an expression of gratitude for the harvest as well as an effort to preserve traditions handed down by our ancestors,” said Bejo on Tuesday, July 7, 2026.
One resident, Ani Jumiati, said she was happy to receive fruit and vegetables from the gunungan of harvested produce. According to her, the blessed crops are believed to bring prosperity and fortune to the community.
“I’m happy to get fruit and vegetables from the gunungan. We always look forward to this tradition every year because it has become part of life in Gumingsir Village,” she said.
Through the Grebeg Sura observance, Gumingsir residents hope that the values of mutual cooperation, gratitude, and local wisdom will continue to be preserved so that ancestral cultural heritage can be maintained and passed on to future generations. (Annaila Azzahra-EN)
