RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian Embassy in Paris has announced that the newly inaugurated thematic garden Jardin Indonesien – I Ketut Wirta in Brittany, western France, occupies five hectares and fully adopts traditional Nusantara landscaping. In a written statement on Wednesday, 1 July 2026, the embassy said the green space was specially designed with characteristic Indonesian vegetation, from tropical plants and a hundred palm trees to stretches of terraced rice fields.

According to Indonesia’s ambassador to France, Mohamad Oemar, the themed garden in Saint‑Jacut‑les‑Pins is expected to become a new cultural hub. Its presence is projected to introduce Indonesia’s rich arts, traditions, and architecture permanently to the French public.

"This Indonesian Garden is a bridge that connects our two nations through culture, nature, and mutual respect," Ambassador Oemar said at the garden’s inauguration on Saturday, 27 June 2026.

Visitors to the garden can see a range of Nusantara structures such as a Toraja house, a Javanese joglo, Balinese rice granaries, and a Borobudur‑style stupa. The site also features Hindu statues, wood carvings, and decorative ornaments crafted directly by Indonesian artisans.

As reported by Antara, the ambassador said the garden can serve as a window showcasing the beauty of Nusantara culture to the French public. He added that this will help them better appreciate Indonesia’s diversity and foster intercultural dialogue.

Ambassador Oemar praised Tropical Parc, the parent organization of Jardin Indonesien – I Ketut Wirta, for their affection for Indonesia and dedication in realizing the themed garden in Bretagne.

He also reiterated his commitment to continue supporting the development of the Indonesian Garden as a center for promoting Nusantara culture in France. Furthermore, he emphasized that the park serves as a symbol of enduring friendship between the two nations.

At the same event, Saint‑Jacut‑les‑Pins Mayor Sophie Bouchon described the Indonesian Garden as a unique tourist attraction that contributes to the region’s appeal.

Erven Gicquel, representing the Tropical Parc owner family, said the Indonesian Garden is the result of more than four decades of effort. During its development, the family conducted direct observations across various parts of Indonesia.

He explained that the garden’s name is dedicated to I Ketut Wirta, a friend of the Gicquel family who introduced them to Indonesian culture. That close relationship inspired the family to bring Indonesia’s cultural heritage to the French public. ***
