RRI.CO.ID, Lumajang - By blending ancestral performance art with digital era promotion and grassroots commercialism, the Lumajang, Regency Administration in East Java, has successfully transformed Watu Pecak Beach into an engine for regional economic growth and youth character building.

The multi-faceted strategy culminated on Sunday, June 28, 2026, at the peak of the 2026 Segoro Topeng Kaliwungu and Jaran Kencak festival, an official inclusion in the national Kharisma Event Nusantara (KEN) calendar. Far from a mere seasonal spectacle, the event serves as a calculated structural blueprint to anchor regional identity in younger generations while pumping immediate liquidity into coastal enterprises and creative industries.

The grand centerpiece featured a colossal performance by 500 youth dancers who successfully passed a rigorous curation process involving over 1,100 auditionees from 114 schools and 29 dance studios across Lumajang.

"Cultural preservation isn't just about festivals or performances. The most important thing is to instill a sense of belonging in the younger generation. When they understand the meaning of their local culture, that's where cultural heritage will live on," Lumajang Regent Indah Amperawati said on Sunday, June 28, 2026, as quoted by Infopublik.id.

Beyond the cultural renaissance, the massive tourist influx catalyzed an unprecedented economic windfall for coastal merchants, transportation workers, and micro-enterprises on Watu Pecak Beach. Among the most visible beneficiaries were local horse-riding vendors, who reported exponential revenue jumps as urban visitors crowded the shoreline.

"On a normal day, I earn around IDR 100,000 (USD 6) to IDR 150,000. During the Kaliwungu Mask Festival, I can earn up to IDR 1.5 million to IDR 2 million a day," said Supriadi, a local horse handler who intentionally maintained his affordable standard rates of IDR 10,000 for children and IDR 20,000 for adults to keep the experience accessible.

Echoing this sentiment, Nawawi, another equestrian service provider, expressed hope for a more consistent event pipeline. "Hopefully, activities like this won't just happen once a year. If tourists come frequently, we'll also benefit," he remarked.

Responding to these grassroots demands, Regent Indah Amperawati pledged that the local administration would institutionalize the festival into a permanent, expanding economic vehicle.

"We will continue to hold the Kaliwungu Mask Festival every year. Moving forward, we will also consider various events at Watu Pecak Beach and other tourist destinations to further enhance the community's economic benefits," the Regent emphasized.

To ensure the festival's economic momentum outlives the weekend, the Lumajang Communications and Information Agency (Diskominfo) launched a strategic photography competition designed to harvest premium digital assets for long-term tourism marketing.

The contest drew 105 professional and amateur photographers from various metropolis centers, including Jakarta and neighboring Jember, who captured everything from the theatrical stage drama to local MSME culinary stalls.

Lumajang Diskominfo Head Mustaqim noted that in the modern digital ecosystem, peer-to-peer visual storytelling far outweighs rigid administration propaganda. He recalled the Regent's explicit instructions to crowdsource the region's publicity.

"The Regent advised that Segoro Topeng Kaliwungu be promoted. We hope that each photo produced will not only be a work of photography, but also a story that invites the public to learn about Lumajang's culture, nature, and potential. When these works are shared, Lumajang's promotion will truly continue," Mustaqim explained.

The creative framework won praise from visiting artists, including Markus Karang Suroyo, a photographer from Jember.

"The event concept was very interesting and provided plenty of space for photographers to tell stories through images. I not only photographed the performances, but also captured the atmosphere, the expressions of the people, and the beauty of the beach. All of that created a story worth sharing," Markus observed.

While out-of-town participants highly commended the zero-fee registration, integrated hospitality, and professional logistics, they advised organizers to allocate dedicated media pits to maximize vantage points for future iterations.
