Pariaman Youth Revive Rare Serabi to In-Laws Tradition

RRI.CO.ID, Pariaman - Dozens of high‑school students in Pariaman City, West Sumatra, joined Bundo Kanduang (traditional women leaders) in a street procession carrying tens of thousands of serabi, a traditional pancake, during the Maantaan Sambareh ka Rumah Mintuo Festival (delivering serabi to the in‑laws).
The event, part of the Pesona Budaya Tabuik Piaman 2026 program, represents a concrete effort by younger generations to resist modernization’s erosion of local traditions now becoming rare.
“In an era of globalization and modernization, many of our traditions are being forgotten. Therefore, as young people, Bundo Kanduang and niniak mamak (traditional elders), it is time for us to preserve this extraordinary culture together,” said Pariaman Mayor, Yota Balad, during the Maantaan Sambareh ka Rumah Mintuo Festival in Pariaman on Friday, 26 June 2026.
He noted that the custom of delivering a rice‑flour snack was once widely practiced and eagerly anticipated, but today it is fading and the dish is increasingly hard to find in the market. “When I was young, the arrival of ‘Bulan Sambareh’ was always a moment to look forward to,” he said, as quoted by Antara.
He added that the tradition should be revitalized because it carries deep philosophical meaning about respect and sincerity within family relationships. He hopes the festival will catalyze cooperation among stakeholders to restore the tradition and the distinctive Pariaman culinary heritage, especially among young people.
“We must understand that this procession is an offering of sambareh to mintuo (in‑laws) given with sincerity, not merely a performative activity,” he said.
Head of Pariaman’s Tourism and Culture Agency, Ferialdi, said the custom of delivering serabi to in‑laws has potential to be proposed to the central government for recognition as an intangible cultural heritage.
Secretary of Pariaman’s Minangkabau Traditional Council Institution, Priyaldi, said the festival involved at least 17 community groups, including Bundo Kanduang and senior high‑school students. Each group comprised about 50 members, and each member carried 50 serabi.
The Maantaan Sambareh ka Rumah Mintuo festival was one of the events in the Pesona Budaya Tabuik Piaman 2026 series, which ran from 16 to 28 June 2026. ***
