RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Highly restricted, exceptionally preserved artifacts from the 14th-century Majapahit Empire kept inside the royal repositories of Pura Mangkunegaran in Surakarta, Central Java, are bound for Washington DC, anchoring a major cultural diplomacy campaign at the Smithsonian Institution.

The upcoming world-class exhibition marks a concrete breakthrough stemming from the United States–Indonesia cultural partnership agreement signed in 2023. By dispatching priceless imperial heirlooms alongside classical royal performers to the American capital, diplomats aim to construct an immersive geopolitical bridge between the two nations through soft-power heritage exchanges.

The Indonesian Ambassador to the United States, Indroyono Soesilo, noted that introducing these crown jewels to the American public is a powerful vehicle for international public relations.

"The collaboration between Pura Mangkunegaran and the Smithsonian demonstrates that cultural diplomacy can build strong bridges between the peoples of both countries," said Ambassador Indroyono Soesilo in a statement received in Jakarta on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Ambassador Indroyono added that placing the Majapahit era artifacts and the court performing arts of Mangkunegaran on the global stage expands international comprehension of Indonesia's deep classical history.

"At the same time, it will strengthen people-to-people contact, which is an important foundation of the Indonesia-United States partnership," he said.

The logistical implementation of the historic loan was finalized during an official state visit by a senior delegation from the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art to the Pura Mangkunegaran palace in Surakarta, on Friday, June 19, 2026.

The Smithsonian delegation was spearheaded by esteemed Southeast Asian curator Emma Stein, alongside audience development strategist Erin Bryan, international partnership specialist Hutomo Wicaksono, and digital media expert Jenifer Bosworth. The Washington delegates were received directly by Gusti Sura alongside the high-ranking officials of the Mangkunegaran royal court.

The Smithsonian Institution already maintains a highly regarded baseline collection of Indonesian antiquities, including Hindu-Buddhist statues, temple reliefs, traditional textiles, and ethnographic artifacts that serve as premier academic references for Southeast Asian art history in the United States.

The high-level meeting in Surakarta successfully mapped out the technical blueprints for transport security and international exhibition guidelines for the Majapahit artifacts.

Beyond the physical artifact transit, the Smithsonian has committed to a routine international stage for the royal court's performing arts division. Emma Stein confirmed that Mangkunegaran’s classical dancers and musicians will be directly integrated into the Smithsonian’s signature public performance schedule in Washington DC, which takes place every Friday.

Through this live performative platform, Stein hopes to widen the corridors of Indonesian cultural diplomacy on an influential international stage. To foster long-term institutional capacity building, the partnership also encompasses an expansive technical support program.

The Smithsonian will assist Pura Mangkunegaran in upgrading its archival infrastructure by modernizing its inventory tracking systems, executing advanced 3D digitalization of physical antiquities, and refining the management of the palace's vast visual assets according to international museum best practices.

During their stay inside the historic palace complex, the Washington curators were treated to an exclusive showcase of sacred Mangkunegaran court dances, a precursor to the centuries-old Javanese pageantry that will soon be introduced to global audiences. ***
