RRI.CO.ID, Pacitan - The Song Terus Museum in Pacitan, East Java, was the subject of a formal inspection by Minister of Culture Fadli Zon on March 27, 2026, as part of an initiative to highlight the site as a cornerstone of Indonesian prehistory.

During the visit, the Minister emphasized the urgent need to transform the facility into a dynamic educational and cultural center that narrates the complete journey of human civilization in the archipelago.

The museum sits within the renowned Gunung Sewu karst landscape and houses archaeological findings from the Song Terus Cave and other sites which record human activity stretching back as far as 300,000 years.

During the visit, Minister Fadli Zon noted that the museum provides a unique window into human continuity, featuring famous prehistoric remains such as Mbah Sayem, estimated to be around 8,500 years old. The site’s history of research is extensive, involving legendary figures ranging from the colonial-era researcher Von Koenigswald to Indonesian archaeology pioneer R.P. Suyono.

"In this museum, we can witness a series of journeys of human civilization in Pacitan, from the beginning to modern humans like today," the Minister remarked, as quoted by the ministry's official website.

To move beyond being a mere "storage for artifacts," the Minister outlined a vision for modernizing the museum's functions to better serve the public.

Key proposed upgrades to support public literacy and engagement include the implementation of digital storytelling, which involves utilizing 3D film screenings to bring prehistoric life to the screen for a more immersive experience.

The Minister also emphasized infrastructure growth, specifically the development of onsite auditoriums and dedicated spaces for cultural arts performances to diversify the museum's offerings.

Furthermore, the project focuses on inclusive learning by ensuring the complex remains an accessible "cultural pocket" that provides valuable resources for researchers and students alike.

The Song Terus site is globally recognized for its wealth of stone tools, faunal remains, and evidence of long-term human habitation. Its location within the karst hills of Pacitan makes it a vital scientific landmark for understanding how ancient humans adapted to their environment over tens of thousands of years. ***
