RRI.CO.ID, Padang - The Minister of Culture of the Republic of Indonesia, Fadli Zon, conducted an inspection of the Indarung I Factory area owned by PT Semen Padang in Lubuk Kilangan, Padang. Built in 1910, this was the first cement factory in Indonesia and Southeast Asia, and the site stands as tangible evidence of technological development in the Asia-Pacific region.

The historical significance of the site is twofold. UNESCO has formally recognized the archives of the Indarung I Factory as part of the Memory of the World Committee for Asia and the Pacific (MOWCAP).

Simultaneously, the physical structures of the factory have been designated as a National Cultural Heritage site, marking it as a milestone of industrialization and a symbol of national independence in Indonesian development.

During his visit on Thursday, March 12, 2026, Minister Fadli emphasized the potential for redeveloping the Indarung I area into a functional historic district. He suggested that key points within the site could be transformed into educational spaces and hubs for artistic expression.

“This area can be utilized, for example, as an amphitheater, for exhibitions, and theater performances. These buildings, which are already cultural heritage sites, can be activated into an art space, a space for artistic and cultural expression,” explained Minister Fadli Zon, as quoted by the ministry's official website.

The Minister noted that while the site’s foundation is strong, several sections require repairs and structural interventions. He stressed that this development requires a collaborative effort involving the central government, regional authorities, local communities, and PT Semen Padang.

The goal is to evolve the site from a silent historical monument into a vibrant public learning space that enriches the narrative of national industrial history.

Through this initiative, the Ministry of Culture reaffirms its commitment to protecting and revitalizing historical areas as sources of knowledge and inspiration. The Indarung I site is envisioned as a model for managing historic industrial sites that can present a powerful narrative regarding the historical journey of technology, industry, and national self-reliance.

“This location is already very good and strong. I am confident that this can become an additional space for expression, especially since Indarung I has already become a cultural heritage site,” Minister Fadli Zon concluded. ***
