RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Member of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), Erna Sari Dewi stressed the importance of maintaining safety, comfort, affordable fares, and service sustainability as Jabodebek Light Rail Transit (Jabodebek LRT), a light rail system in Greater Jakarta, continues to grow. She said strengthening maintenance systems and emergency preparedness is essential to ensuring LRT services are safe and reliable in the long term.
Erna, of the NasDem Party, also said safety is a primary concern because the LRT is a fully automated transport system. Therefore, maintenance of its rolling stock and infrastructure must continue to improve, not only through preventive maintenance but also through predictive maintenance based on sensors and real-time monitoring.
"First of all, our visit to the LRT is intended to ensure the quality of its services. Is it comfortable, is it safe for users, and can it be sustained in the future? I'm highlighting security and safety because safety is the most important thing," Erna said during a House visit to inspect the Jabodebek LRT Bekasi Line in Bekasi, West Java, on Friday, October 2, 2026.
According to her, predictive maintenance is needed to detect potential disruptions early so that the risk of accidents can be mitigated. This is particularly important because most of the LRT operates automatically and runs on elevated tracks.
In addition to the maintenance system, Erna also called for regular safety and evacuation drills. The drills should take into account the needs of vulnerable groups, including elderly people, children, and people with disabilities.
She said the drills should not be conducted merely as a formality, but should provide concrete measurements of the time needed to carry out rescues in the event of disruptions, disasters, or accidents.
"These drills need to be conducted frequently so that we can determine how much time is needed to carry out a rescue if a disaster or accident occurs on the LRT," she explained, as quoted from dpr.go.id.
The DPR welcomed the growing number of Jabodebek LRT passengers. As of August 2026, the number of passengers had reached 21.81 million, with the operator targeting more than 30 million passengers by the end of 2026.
Nevertheless, Erna said the increase in passenger numbers must be accompanied by consistent service quality. Cleanliness, comfort, safety, and affordable fares need to be maintained so that the public continues to trust public transportation.
She also emphasized the importance of keeping LRT fares affordable as part of its public service. According to her, the growth in passenger numbers and expansion of the LRT network must continue to take into account the public’s ability to access the service.
Erna then called for LRT development to be integrated with other modes of transportation. Intermodal integration, feeder services, pedestrian access, parking facilities, and the development of transit-oriented development (TOD) areas could attract more passengers, particularly along the Bekasi corridor., particularly along the Bekasi corridor.
"My hope is that the network will be expanded so that more LRT lines can be added and better integrated. That way, people will find it easier to reach their destinations," Erna concluded.
