RRI.CO.ID, Wamena - The Jayawijaya Regency Administration in Highland Papua, through its local Culture and Tourism Agency (Disbudpar), is expanding empowerment programs aimed at strengthening indigenous-based micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
Speaking in Wamena on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, Head of the Jayawijaya Disbudpar Engelbert ChW Sorabut explained that the initiative positions indigenous Papuans (Orang Asli Papua or OAP) as primary drivers in producing and commercializing traditional cultural items.
"We mentor MSME practitioners, most of whom are indigenous people in Jayawijaya producing various cultural ornaments. The Regional National Handicraft Council (Dekranasda) subsequently assists in marketing these cultural products," Engelbert said, as quoted by Antara.
Key products crafted by the mentored groups include authentic woven noken bags made from natural fibers, traditional wood carvings, and processed highland coffee.
To expand market reach, the Jayawijaya Regency Dekranasda is preparing selections of these handcrafted goods for national exposure at the Dekranasda National Exhibition in Makassar, South Sulawesi.
"We will bring natural products handcrafted from raw, natural materials to highlight their authentic craftsmanship at the Dekranasda event in Makassar," said Jayawijaya Dekranasda Chairperson Idawati Waromi.
Local authorities expressed confidence that showcasing indigenous handicrafts on national platforms will boost local economies while preserving the distinct cultural heritage of the Central Highlands. ***
