RRI.CO.ID, Banda Aceh - The Aceh Provincial Administration, through the Culture and Tourism Agency (Disbudpar), is partnering with the Indonesian Internet Domain Name Registry (PANDI) to digitalize the traditional Arab Jawi script and protect the historic writing system from extinction.
Under the collaboration, the Aceh Provincial Administration and PANDI agreed to establish a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to register the Arab Jawi script as an Internationalized Domain Name (IDN) at the Top Level Domain (TLD) level, establishing a dedicated online presence for the script.
Aceh Disbudpar Head Dedy Yuswadi said in Banda Aceh on Tuesday that digitalizing the traditional script aligns with local regulatory mandates aimed at preserving regional heritage.
"Digitalizing the Aceh Arab Jawi script is part of the mandate under Qanun No. 10/2022 concerning the Aceh Language, which outlines the coaching, maintenance, and development of the Acehnese script, the Arab Jawi script is planned to be created into domain names or websites to strengthen identity and maintain its existence in the digital space," Dedy said on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
To support the technical standards of the initiative, the Disbudpar Language and Art Division Head, Nurlaila Hamjah, noted that follow-up meetings will be convened with academics, language experts, and community members.
The discussions will determine standardized keyboard character layouts and ensure the digital font references authentic historical manuscripts used in Aceh since the 13th century during the Samudera Pasai Kingdom era.
Disbudpar appreciated PANDI's ongoing nationwide initiatives to digitalize Nusantara scripts, highlighting that formal regulatory backing from the Aceh Qanun fulfills essential criteria for submitting the Arab Jawi script to global domain registration bodies. ***
