Cilacap and Bitung Slated for Modern Integrated Port Transformations

RRI.CO.ID, Jembrana - The Ocean Fishery Ports (PPS) in Cilacap, Central Java, and Bitung, North Sulawesi, have been selected as the next strategic locations for transformation into modern, integrated fishing ports and international-standard trade centers.

Marine Affairs and Fisheries Minister Sakti Wahyu Trenggono disclosed the expansion plans on Tuesday, September 29, noting that the upgrades in Cilacap and Bitung will follow initial pilot projects currently underway in Cirebon, West Java, and Jembrana, Bali.

"After this, we will do the same in Cilacap, then Bitung. So there are four ports that we will upgrade into modern ports, an international fish market of sorts," Minister Trenggono said during a press briefing in Jembrana, Bali, as quoted by Antara.

The ministry is positioning Cilacap and Bitung as core components of its national port modernization pilot program. Once developed, the hubs will be closely monitored to measure their efficiency in boosting fishery exports, streamlining services for local fishermen, and supporting business processing before the model is rolled out to other maritime regions.

According to Trenggono, Cilacap was specifically chosen due to its strategic placement along the Southern Indian Ocean route (Zone 573), a region renowned for high-value marine resources including bluefin tuna and squid. Bitung was designated to serve as the primary modern integrated hub powering the fisheries economy across Eastern Indonesia.

The government expects that modernizing facilities in Cilacap and Bitung will reinforce national supply chains and create dynamic new economic growth centers in Central Java and North Sulawesi. ***
