RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Since its first operation in 2019, the Jakarta Light Rail Transit (Jakarta LRT) stretched only 5.8 kilometers with no rail connection, running from Kelapa Gading station in the commercial area of Kelapa Gading in North Jakarta to Velodrome station near the Jakarta International Velodrome in East Jakarta. Starting Wednesday, September 16, 2026, the system extends to 12.2 kilometers in total, to the public transit hub of Manggarai.
Manggarai railway station is at the center of the hub, with the KRL Commuter Line's Red and Blue lines, as well as the airport train to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. The station is also connected to the Transjakarta bus rapid transit system, the world's largest of its kind, and will soon be connected to long-distance trains.
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto took the light rail system from Kelapa Gading to Manggarai on Wednesday, then inaugurated the extension. In his remarks, Prabowo said the inauguration demonstrated Indonesia’s steady progress.
“Today is a proud day for us as a nation. We are continuing to make steady progress. It may not be spectacular, but we are moving forward, step by step," Prabowo said.
"As was mentioned earlier, five or six years ago, or even 10 years ago, who would have thought that we could have a transportation system like the one we have today?" he continued.
Meanwhile, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo said the Jakarta LRT was built by the Jakarta provincial government to strengthen the integrated public transportation system, boost productivity, and improve connectivity. He said the system, with the total investment of Rp12.1 trillion (about US$682,000), is expected to carry 80,000 passengers daily.
"Each train set can accommodate 270 passengers. And once the service is fully operational, Mr. President, it is expected to carry approximately 80,000 passengers daily," he said to Prabowo.
Pramono claimed the public transport connectivity in Jakarta has reached 93%. He also claimed public transport users in the city have increased by 15% in two years.
"Therefore, despite the ongoing traffic congestion, people in Jakarta are finding it much easier to use public transportation nowadays," he said.
The Kelapa Gading–Manggarai line is part of the larger Jakarta LRT development, which will connect the eastern and central parts of the city, including a future line to the Jakarta International Stadium. It complements the Jabodebek LRT, another light rail system by the state-owned railway company KAI, which connects Jakarta to the neighboring cities of Bekasi and Depok.
