RRI.CO.ID, Yogyakarta - The Yogyakarta Provincial Administration is exploring cooperation with New Zealand to supply semen from high-quality breeding bulls. The initiative is intended to improve efficiency and enhance the quality of livestock breeding stock in Yogyakarta Province.

Head of the Yogyakarta Investment and One-Stop Integrated Licensing Agency, Ghofar Ismail, explained that importing bull semen from New Zealand would support the province’s artificial insemination program. He said the approach was far more practical than importing live cattle.

“Besides reducing shipping costs and travel distances, this option minimizes regulatory and animal-safety risks during transportation. So, we can bring in the semen,” he said on Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2026.

Responding to the Yogyakarta Provincial Administration’s needs, New Zealand Ambassador to Indonesia, Philip Taula, welcomed the proposal and opened the possibility of a sister-province cooperation scheme. Through such a scheme, New Zealand would not only seek to strengthen the livestock sector.

The partnership could also be expanded to agriculture, education, culture, and investment. Philip said that Yogyakarta had significant potential, particularly in education, as it already maintains links with several universities in New Zealand.

His side will soon map provinces in New Zealand with similar potential to be paired with Yogyakarta Province. “We are discussing how New Zealand and Yogyakarta can work together,” he said.

The concrete form of the cooperation will be discussed further with the Yogyakarta Provincial Administration once an agreement has been reached on the partner province. (Annaila Azzahra-EN)
