RRI.CO.ID, Jayapura - Cocoa beans from Nambon Village, District Kemtuk, Jayapura Regency, Papua, are poised to enter the global market following the official launch of the Papua Sustainable Cocoa Roadmap by the British Embassy and the Papua Provincial Administration on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.
This strategic initiative is projected not only to boost production volumes, but also to transform the fortunes of local farmers. It aims to elevate them from mere suppliers of raw materials to key players in the international chocolate industry supply chain.
British Ambassador to Indonesia, Dominic Jermey, described the roadmap as a critical step toward building a more sustainable and resilient cocoa sector in Papua. He emphasized that the initiative also aims to improve farmer welfare and create economic opportunities for local communities.
“It is an honor for me to make my first official visit to Papua and witness firsthand the extraordinary potential held by the Papuan people,” he said following the launch of the sustainable cocoa roadmap in Jayapura Regency on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.
According to Dominic, the United Kingdom (UK) side expressed appreciation to the Papua Provincial Government for setting the development direction for the cocoa sector through this roadmap.
“We strongly support this initiative through the Cocoa Diversification and Agroforestry Approach (CARE) Papua program, which encourages increased agricultural productivity and the adoption of sustainable cocoa practices,” he said, as quoted by Antara.
Meanwhile, Papua Deputy Governor, Aryoko Rumaropen, conveyed that the Papua Provincial Administration welcomes cooperation with the UK in developing the cocoa commodity in the region.
“The sustainable cocoa roadmap serves as a guideline for developing the cocoa sector while taking into account productivity, farmer welfare, economic opportunities, and environmental sustainability,” he said.
According to Aryoko, cocoa development must deliver tangible benefits to communities, especially farmers who are the primary actors in this sector.“Collaboration between the administration, communities, farmers, and development partners is indeed essential to ensure that cocoa development proceeds sustainably,” he added. ***
