RRI.CO.ID, Mataram - The limited reopening of the Mount Rinjani in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) from September 1, 2026, now directly affects a range of non-tourism activities carried out by local communities. In addition to hikers, residents planning to hold religious rituals, cultural activities, or research must comply with strict supervision and access restrictions aimed at preventing forest fires.
“Nature tourism activities at Mount Rinjani National Park are being reopened on a limited basis,” said Head of the Mount Rinjani National Park Center (BTNGR), Budhy Kurniawan, in Mataram (NTB) on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.
The policy follows a circular issued by the Director General of Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation at the Ministry of Forestry. The measure was taken to prevent forest fires through temporary closures and the limited reopening of mountain-hiking tourism.
“The limited reopening covers hiking tourism, ritual, religious, cultural, social, and research activities,” he said, as quoted by Antara.
He said several measures must be observed during the limited reopening period, including tighter security and supervision across the area. Patrols and access controls will be stepped up, while visitors’ belongings will be inspected for items that could potentially ignite fires.
“The careless use of fire is prohibited, and forest and land fire-response preparedness will be strengthened together with relevant stakeholders,” he said.
He added that online booking services through the eRinjani application have been temporarily suspended from September 1, 2026, until fire-risk conditions are declared safe for a full reopening.
“Bookings that were made and paid for before that date can still be accommodated in accordance with the applicable provisions,” he said.
The next decision on the park’s opening status will be determined by the level of fire risk and developments in the dry season at Mount Rinjani National Park. Regular evaluations will continue by monitoring any escalation in forest and land fire incidents. "Rinjani remains open, but safety and conservation are the priorities,” he said.
He urged both local residents and tourists to help protect Rinjani from fire threats. “Do not light fires carelessly. Do not leave any source of ignition behind. Do not take risks,” he said. ***
