Yogyakarta — The Gunungkidul Regency Adminstration in the Special Region of Yogyakarta has initiated a labor partnership with South Korea to deploy local workers in the agricultural and fishery sectors under a seasonal worker scheme.
Following an audience held at the Regent's Official Residence in Wonosari on Sunday, August 30, 2026, South Korean association representative Han Sang Jae confirmed that the initial plan allocates a quota of 100 workers, divided equally between agriculture and fisheries, under an eight-month seasonal contract earning an estimated IDR 30 million (USD 1,690) monthly. To ensure legal compliance and security, the initiative will operate under a direct Government-to-Government (G2G) or regional administrative framework.
Gunungkidul Regent Endah Subekti Kuntariningsih said that selection and administrative procedures will begin shortly, targeting departures in March or April to align with South Korea's planting season, with pre-departure language and cultural training managed in collaboration with Diponegoro University (Undip), Semarang, Central Java.
Regional officials and international representatives highlighted that structured labor programs provide sustainable employment pathways while bolstering the long-term economic well-being of local communities. Representative of the South Korea Cooperation Association Han Sang Jae outlined the operational structure and economic terms of the seasonal deployment program.
"This collaboration will be executed through a Government-to-Government or inter-regency scheme to guarantee worker legality and safety, South Korea requires thousands of seasonal workers for eight-month contracts, offering an estimated monthly wage of around IDR 30 million, allowing a worker to earn approximately IDR 240 million over the full contract period," Han Sang Jae said in Wonosari on Sunday, August 30, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Gunungkidul Regent Endah Subekti Kuntariningsih emphasized the initiative's role in addressing youth unemployment and human resource development.
"This program serves as a strategic solution for the high number of high school and vocational graduates in Gunungkidul who do not pursue higher education, beyond providing international experience, workers will receive guidance so their overseas earnings can serve as productive capital or cooperative investments upon returning home, ensuring long-term welfare for our region," Endah noted. ***
