NTT Earthquake Death Toll Reaches 111, Displacement Exceeds 190K

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has recorded 111 deaths from the East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) earthquake as of the 15th day of the emergency response. According to the latest report, the death toll remained unchanged from the previous day, based on response developments as of Saturday, 29 August 2026.
“Today, as was the case yesterday, we have not found any additional fatalities. We continue to pray and hope that no more victims will be found,” said Acting Head of BNPB’s Disaster Data, Information and Communication Centre, Berton SP Panjaitan, during an online press briefing on Saturday, 29 August 2026.
Berton said aftershocks were still occurring following the magnitude 7.7 main earthquake that struck East Nusa Tenggara on Saturday, 15 August 2026. According to records from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), 9,278 aftershocks have been recorded so far, with the strongest reaching a magnitude of 6.2.
He also said the number of displaced residents had increased following data updates and validation in Ngada Regency. Berton said the increase amounted to 16,394 people, bringing the total number of displaced persons to 192,303.
He said the change was made because the previous data had been considered insufficiently updated and inaccurate. The validation process was therefore carried out to ensure more accurate figures for both centrally accommodated and independently displaced residents.
“The data we had received so far were not sufficiently up to date or valid, so validation was carried out. In Ngada, the number that had previously stood at only 3,259 people has now risen to 21,552 displaced residents,” he said.
Meanwhile, BNPB also recorded that 3,627 households had returned from the centralised evacuation shelter at the Samador Sports Hall in Sikka. “Therefore, starting today, the field command post for handling independently displaced residents and the public kitchen will be moved to Palue Island,” he said.
Berton said families whose homes were not damaged by the earthquake had returned to their respective residences. Meanwhile, the next phase of assistance for displaced residents will be directed more towards Palue Island, in line with evolving needs on the ground.
In addition to managing displacement, BNPB continues to distribute logistical aid to communities affected by the East Nusa Tenggara earthquake. As of 29 August 2026, total aid supplies delivered had reached 1,916 tonnes.
The assistance has been distributed through several routes and locations to meet the needs of affected residents. BNPB also said it would continue monitoring aid requirements based on developments in field conditions. (Annaila Azzahra-EN)
