RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Post-disaster response efforts following the magnitude 7.7 earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) have made positive progress, with the cumulative return of evacuees reaching 65 percent. The progress was marked by the fifth phase of returns involving 725 residents, or 169 families, from Sikka Regency, who were allowed to return to their homes after their residences were confirmed to be safe and free from severe damage.
Acting head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency’s (BNPB) Center for Disaster Data, Information, and Communication, Berton SP Panjaitan, said the hundreds of evacuees decided to return because their homes were considered safe and had not sustained serious damage.
“As we mentioned earlier, some evacuees have returned from Sikka. We recorded another return from Sikka in this fifth phase, involving 725 people or 169 families,” he said during a press conference in Jakarta on Friday, August 28, 2026.
Berton said the overall return process has so far reached 65 percent of the total number of evacuees in NTT. A total of 175,909 people remain at evacuation shelters.
BNPB, together with local administration, is providing assistance and transportation to ensure evacuees can return home safely. BNPB experts and other relevant parties are also assisting in assessing the structural integrity of homes and public facilities in affected areas.
As reported by Antara, the return assistance is intended to ensure that residents are genuinely safe and can begin rebuilding their lives and resuming daily activities once they have returned to their homes.
“However, BNPB is also ensuring that basic services at evacuation sites remain available for residents whose homes suffered severe damage or who remain concerned about the possibility of aftershocks,” he said. ***
